SuperHeart 2016 a Smashing Success
After countless hours of preparation and planning, by the early hours of Friday February 5, 2016 we were ready for the start of our annual Surrey Falcons SuperHeart Tournament
Once the pucks started dropping we became witness to an amazing showcase of female hockey and community spirit. For three straight days from early morning to late in the evening there was a fantastically positive tournament vibe. Visiting players and parents were impressed by the quality of the players’ gifts, the concessions, and raffle prizes.
On the ice the games were competitive. 85% of the games were decided by four goals or less and 45% of those were by one goal or tied. Three of the seven Gold Medal Final games remained tied after overtime and had to be decided by a shoot-out.
Surrey Falcons teams were well represented in the medal games. Our Midget team took home Bronze in the 8-Team Midget “A” Division. Both of our Atom teams and both of our Bantam teams played in the Gold Medal Final of their respective divisions. Unfortunately, our Atom 1 and Bantam C teams were two teams to feel the heartbreak of just missing out on Gold at the end of a shoot-out. But, the final buzzer was a welcome sound for one Falcon team. Our Pee Wee “A” team scored into an empty net just as time expired for a 3-1 victory to win Gold in their division.
At the end of the week-end most who have been to more than a few tournaments said it was the best ever. The fact that teams were asking how to apply for next year’s tournament as they said good-bye speaks volumes. Thanks to our sponsors the tournament was a financial success as well.
It was almost entirely the hard work of a small group of dedicated volunteers that made this great tournament possible. For everything they have done that most of us wouldn’t even know or understand special thanks to Carla Reid and the volunteer organizing committee of Kim Leroux, Robbyn Drayson, Linda Mizuno, Tamra Douglas, Gurpreet Bal, Sarah Bower, Jennifer Allen, Darren Mahaffy and Jeremy Reid.
